Organic or Conventional Food? Navigating the Grocery Aisle
Thursday Sep 28, 2023
Thursday Sep 28, 2023
If you’ve ever found yourself, standing in the grocery store aisle, pondering whether to reach for the organic tomatoes, or their conventional counterparts, you’re not alone.
The organic versus conventional food debate, has been a hot topic for years.
So, let’s dig in and explore the pros and cons of each, to help you make an informed decision.
Let’s start with the Eco-Friendly Appeal.
Benefits of Organic Food.
Organic farming avoids synthetic pesticides, which are harmful to both humans and the environment.
Studies have shown, small to moderate increases in some nutrients, in chemical-free products, but the difference with conventional food is minimal.
Many people claim natural foods taste better, although this is subjective.
Drawbacks of Organic Food.
Organic produce often spoils faster, because of the lack of preservatives.
They are more expensive, due to the labour-intensive farming practices involved.
Let’s move on with the Traditional Route.
Advantages of Conventional Food.
Conventional foods are cheaper, making them more accessible, to a broader range of consumers.
Thanks to preservatives, they have a longer shelf life, and are available in more grocery stores.
Disadvantages of Conventional Food.
They can hold pesticide residues, although they usually fall within safety limits, set by regulatory agencies.
Regular farming uses synthetic chemicals, which are toxic to the environment and yourself.
While these substances, are effective in controlling pests and promoting crop yield, their health risks have led to the ban or restriction of a few of them, in various countries.

How is Chocolate Made? From Bean to Bar
Tuesday Sep 26, 2023
Tuesday Sep 26, 2023
Who doesn’t love chocolate? Well, maybe someone does, but it’s a rarity.
Chocolate is one of the most popular and delicious treats in the world. But have you ever wondered where it comes from or how it’s made?
In today’s episode, we will tell you a bit of the history of the brown gold, its production process, the biggest producers, and tips on how to best enjoy it.
A Brief History of Chocolate
Chocolate comes from the seeds of the cacao tree, which grow in tropical regions around the globe.
It has been consumed since at least the Olmec civilisation in Mesoamerica, dating back to the 19th–11th centuries BCE. The Mayans and Aztecs also enjoyed chocolate beverages before European contact.
Christopher Columbus encountered cacao beans during his fourth mission to the Americas and introduced them to Spain.
Nevertheless, chocolate didn’t gain traction in Europe until Spanish friars presented it to the Spanish court.
Initially consumed as a beverage, the Spanish added sugar and honey to counter its natural bitterness.
By the 17th century, chocolate had become a European staple.

Solar energy is the most popular, and affordable way to generate electricity off-grid.
However, a common question is, “How many solar panels do I need, to power my home?” This, will depend on your energy needs, location, and the number of sunlight hours you get.
Energy demand is higher during the summer, due to air conditioning use, and in the winter, because of heating needs.
Look at your electricity bills during these periods, for a clearer picture of your energy consumption.
Once you have, a clearer panorama of those peak times of the year, read the labels of your appliances, which show the wattage per hour they consume.
After having your everyday energy usage, divide that total, by the number of sun hours you get in a day.
Now, calculate your solar panels.
Given that solar panels, produce electricity from the sun’s rays during daylight, it’s key to know how many hours of sunlight, your home receives in one day.
On a daily basis, the average number of peak sun hours is five. Though it depends on the country and season.
If you get those 5 hours of sun rays, 1 kilowatt of solar panels, would produce five kilowatt-hours.
So, if your daily energy consumption, is 25 kilowatt-hours, 5 kilowatts of photovoltaic cells, will suffice to energise your home.

Vertical Farming: Can it revolutionise food production?
Saturday Jun 10, 2023
Saturday Jun 10, 2023
Discover how Vertical Farming, an innovative and sustainable approach to food production, could revolutionise agriculture and help build a more food-secure future.
For thousands of years, we have relied on traditional agriculture to cultivate crops, and raise livestock, which has been essential for our survival, and societal growth.
This practice involves a complex system of planting, irrigation, and harvest, including heavy machinery and chemicals, like fertilisers and pesticides.
Even though traditional agriculture has been crucial in feeding the world, it has also caused considerable damage, including deforestation, soil degradation, water pollution, and high levels of carbon emissions.
Along came Vertical Farming.
Vertical Farming, refers to the practice of cultivating crops, in vertically stacked layers, or on inclined surfaces, within controlled indoor environments.
These layers, can be integrated into other structures, such as skyscrapers, repurposed warehouses, shipping containers, or custom-built facilities.
Its major advantage, is that it allows farming in urban settings, where land availability is limited.
