Most Americans and Britons, for instance, consume on average between 60 and 77 grams of processed sugar daily, twice the recommended limit for optimal health.
In fact, a large review of 73 meta-analyses found that heavy consumption of added sugar was associated with 45 negative physical outcomes, including diabetes, gout, obesity, high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, cancer, asthma, tooth decay, depression, and early death.

Plastics in the Clouds: A New Height of Pollution
Sunday Oct 15, 2023
Sunday Oct 15, 2023
We find plastics everywhere we look, from streets, beaches, and forests to the seabed and the Arctic ice. They could be bottles, bags, food containers, syringes, or candy wraps.
Plastics do not biodegrade; they just break down into smaller fragments over time, turning into ‘micro- and nanoplastics’.
Once synthetic polymers disintegrate, they can be dragged by water and wind because of their microscopic size.
And now, scientists have detected plastic particles in a new place: clouds floating above mountains.
The Sky is Not the Limit
A peer-reviewed study published in Environmental Chemistry Letters, the first of its kind, found that clouds around Japan’s Mount Fuji and Mount Oyama contain alarming levels of plastic.
Hiroshi Okochi, a professor at Waseda University and author of the investigation, pointed out that plastic pollution can reach long distances and contaminate the planet’s crops and fresh water through ‘plastic rainfall’.
The analysis showed that in the samples collected, the amount of man-made polymers was so high that researchers believe it might cause clouds to form while emitting greenhouse gases.
“If the issue of plastic air pollution is not addressed proactively, climate change and ecological risks may become a reality, causing irreversible and serious environmental damage in the future.”

Is the allure of that new car smell tempting you to upgrade your ride? But the big question is: should you buy or lease your next vehicle?
Buying a car means that you own and can do whatever you want with it, but it also comes with some drawbacks. Depreciation is the most worrying.
Leasing allows you to rent a vehicle for a fixed period and then return or purchase it at the end of the contract.
In this episode, we will give you 10 reasons why you shouldn’t pay for a car and why leasing is a better option for you.

What is a VPN? Do You Need One to Keep You Safe Online?
Monday Oct 02, 2023
Monday Oct 02, 2023
In today’s digital age, online security and privacy are more important than ever.
With the rising number of cyberattacks and data breaches, taking steps to protect your personal information and browsing activity is crucial.
One tool that has gained significant popularity in recent years is a Virtual Private Network (VPN).
But what is a VPN, and how can you use it?
In TFoA’s episode, we’ll explore everything you need to know about VPNs, including their pros and cons and how to go for the best fit.
What is a VPN? The Basics
In simple terms, a Virtual Private Network is a technology that creates a secure and encrypted connection between your device and the internet.
It’s like a cloak of invisibility that will shield you from prying eyes — a virtual tunnel, allowing your data to pass through without being intercepted by hackers or government agencies.
A VPN ensures that your online activities, such as browsing, streaming, and file sharing, remain private and protected.
How Does a VPN Work?
Every time you connect to the internet, your device sends and receives data through your Internet Service Provider (ISP).
So your ISP can see your browsing history, track your digital operations, and even sell your preferences to advertisers.
However, when you use a Virtual Private Network, your data is first encrypted by your device and then sent to a server based in a different location.
From there, your information is decrypted and directed to its destination on the web.

Physical Books or E-Books? The Great Debate
Saturday Sep 30, 2023
Saturday Sep 30, 2023
Greetings, fellow bibliophiles!
Ever found yourself standing in a bookstore or hovering the “Buy Now” button online, torn between the allure of a physical book and the convenience of an e-book?
Ah, the eternal question: “To hold or to swipe?”
In the realm of physical books, it’s a sensory ballet - a dance of fingertips across the textured tapestry of pages, tracing each line like a lover’s whisper.
It is the olfactory embrace of ink and paper, a scent that tells tales of both fresh chapters and time-worn tomes.
The subtle ritual of moistening your finger to tenderly flip to the next page, and even the bittersweet sting of an occasional paper cut, a small tribute to your devotion.
And the grand finale - a rite of passage, if you will. The moment when you reverently place the completed tome on a sprawling, lustrous bookshelf, as if laying a crown jewel in a treasure chest of literary wonders.
“I love the smell of book ink in the morning.” Umberto Eco
On the flip side, there’s the appeal of the e-book - a digital canvas glowing in the palm of your hand, with its cold and sleek screen as a moonlit lake.
This debate has been a tale as old as 1971, when the first e-book flickered into existence, challenging the ink and paper dominion.
For me, the essence lies not in the medium but in the act - the sacred communion of reading, by any means necessary.
Today, we shall wade into the depths of this argument, not to sway your choice, but to revel in the sheer joy of literary exploration.
But before we embark on this journey, let us unfurl the scrolls of history, tracing the lineage of both physical tomes and their digital counterparts.

Organic or Conventional Food? Navigating the Grocery Aisle
Thursday Sep 28, 2023
Thursday Sep 28, 2023
If you’ve ever found yourself, standing in the grocery store aisle, pondering whether to reach for the organic tomatoes, or their conventional counterparts, you’re not alone.
The organic versus conventional food debate, has been a hot topic for years.
So, let’s dig in and explore the pros and cons of each, to help you make an informed decision.
Let’s start with the Eco-Friendly Appeal.
Benefits of Organic Food.
Organic farming avoids synthetic pesticides, which are harmful to both humans and the environment.
Studies have shown, small to moderate increases in some nutrients, in chemical-free products, but the difference with conventional food is minimal.
Many people claim natural foods taste better, although this is subjective.
Drawbacks of Organic Food.
Organic produce often spoils faster, because of the lack of preservatives.
They are more expensive, due to the labour-intensive farming practices involved.
Let’s move on with the Traditional Route.
Advantages of Conventional Food.
Conventional foods are cheaper, making them more accessible, to a broader range of consumers.
Thanks to preservatives, they have a longer shelf life, and are available in more grocery stores.
Disadvantages of Conventional Food.
They can hold pesticide residues, although they usually fall within safety limits, set by regulatory agencies.
Regular farming uses synthetic chemicals, which are toxic to the environment and yourself.
While these substances, are effective in controlling pests and promoting crop yield, their health risks have led to the ban or restriction of a few of them, in various countries.

How is Chocolate Made? From Bean to Bar
Tuesday Sep 26, 2023
Tuesday Sep 26, 2023
Who doesn’t love chocolate? Well, maybe someone does, but it’s a rarity.
Chocolate is one of the most popular and delicious treats in the world. But have you ever wondered where it comes from or how it’s made?
In today’s episode, we will tell you a bit of the history of the brown gold, its production process, the biggest producers, and tips on how to best enjoy it.
A Brief History of Chocolate
Chocolate comes from the seeds of the cacao tree, which grow in tropical regions around the globe.
It has been consumed since at least the Olmec civilisation in Mesoamerica, dating back to the 19th–11th centuries BCE. The Mayans and Aztecs also enjoyed chocolate beverages before European contact.
Christopher Columbus encountered cacao beans during his fourth mission to the Americas and introduced them to Spain.
Nevertheless, chocolate didn’t gain traction in Europe until Spanish friars presented it to the Spanish court.
Initially consumed as a beverage, the Spanish added sugar and honey to counter its natural bitterness.
By the 17th century, chocolate had become a European staple.
